Hypnosis is a powerful therapeutic tool. Hypnosis is considered by some to be one of the best tools to access, mobilize and actualize the potential of the human mind.

Definition of Hypnosis

There are as many different definitions of hypnosis as there are researchers in the field. One definition that I like is the Krasner definition that is taken directly from Dr. Krasner’s book The Wizard Within, this definition states, hypnosis is:

“A process which produces relaxation, distraction of the conscious mind, heightened suggestibility and increased awareness; allowing access to the unconscious mind through the imagination. It also [hypnosis] produces the ability to experience thoughts and images as real.”    A.M. Krasner

For hypnosis to be induced and to produce the desired effect three components must be present: Belief and expectation, you have the belief that you will and can be hypnotized and that hypnotism will work to produce the desired changes. You combine belief with the second component: expectation, you simply expect it to work for you. And so it will. Also, you must let go of any secondary gain for holding on to old patterns.

 “Belief + Expectation = Hypnosis”

Several individuals made impressive strides in the advancement of hypnosis, two of these being Milton Erikson (1902- 1980) & A.M. Krasner, Ph.D. Both are famous and well-respected hypnotists of modern day. Milton is credited for taking hypnosis off the stage, (a stage show is not hypnotherapy) and making it an acceptable form of therapy. It was his influence, which many believe opened the door of the American Medical Association to formally accept its use as a healing modality (1958).

Dr. A.M. Krasner, an established and highly qualified authority on the subject, as well, presented hypnosis as a powerful therapeutic tool. Dr. Krasner drew on his years of research, teaching and clinical experience to establish the American Institute of Hypnotherapy (1981) and The American Board of Hypnotherapy (1982), the Board that sets Hypnosis standards internationally.
